Pinot Gris 2016

Pinot Gris 2016

Tasting Note
The nose shows an enticing array of different flavours led by Apricot, Pear and Quince with some hints of floral notes like orange blossom.
Warm subtle stone fruit flavours with hints of citrus help keep this Pinot Gris soft textured with mouth-watering complexity, without being sweet and too overpowered by light honey notes.

Winemaking
After receiving the machine harvested grapes at the winery, the juice has been split in fractions as it ran off the press, that way the slightly more phenolic hard pressings could be fined whilst leaving the elegant and cleaner free-run juice untouched. A selected yeast strain has been used to ferment both fractions separately at moderate to cool temperatures, so both, elegant floral aromas and complex nutty flavours could develop. After stopping the ferments at the desired residual sweetness levels they got racked of their heavy lees and left on the fine suspended lees for several months adding complexity and depth.

  • Harvest date: 5th April 2016
  • Winemaker: Stefan Heinrich
  • Alcohol: 13.0 %
  • Residual sugar: 5.2 g/L
  • Acidity: 7.0 g/L

Sauvignon Blanc 2016

Sauvignon Blanc 2016

Tasting Note
Plenty of passionfruit and some cassis are prominent on the nose. Almost perfumed aromas of orange blossom and lime make an appearance.
Gooseberry, crisp apple and the subtle juicy tropical flavours of pineapple and passionfruit lead the way to a clean fresh palate with a nicely balanced mouth-feel.

Winemaking
Each vineyard site was picked separately to ensure optimum flavour and ripeness. After destemming and gently pressing the grapes, we chilled the juice and cold settled it for several days so we get clear juice to ferment at low temperatures to preserve the volatile flavours. Left to mature without sulphur on fine lees the wine was finally stabilised and filtered.

  • Harvest date: Between 27th March 2016 and 16th April 2016
  • Winemaker: Stefan Heinrich
  • Alcohol: 12.5%v/v
  • Residual sugar: 3.6 g/L
  • Acidity: 8.4 g/L

Montepulciano Rose 2015

Montepulciano Rose 2015

Tasting Note
Berry flavours and a little stone fruit leads to refreshing dry finish that has a silky yet lingering full body.
Very enticing with a range of dark and red berries ranging from cassis to raspberry. The wine is dry but with a complex structure of stone fruit and some soft tannins the wine shows remarkable complexity.
A great wine to share over light lunch, as a start to a barbeque or with salmon dishes.

Winemaking
After receiving the fruit it was left sitting on skins for about half a day and then gently pressed them. The deeply red coloured juice was chilled and left to settle for several days before adding yeast. A cool and slow ferment to dryness made sure the delicate berry flavours are preserved and with some extended fine lees contact the wine picked up some extra complexity.

  • Harvest date: 24th April 2015
  • Winemaker: Stefan Heinrich
  • Alcohol: 12.0%v/v

Tasting Note
The use of different ferment temperatures allowed for a nicely balanced wine. Peach, apricot and aromatic pears are the leading flavours, lifted by subtle hazelnut notes and quince.

Winemaking
Predominately fruit from our clay based Flett Road vineyard in the Moutere was used in the 2014 Pinot Gris. During pressing the juice was split into fractions, with lightly pressed juice fermented separately from the rest. Left on fine lees for several months allowed the wine to develop clean fruit characters with a soft texture.

Chardonnay 2014

Chardonnay 2014

Tasting Note
A potpourri of flavours is the most fitting description for this year’s Chardonnay. Citrus and apple, as well as tropical flavours like banana and pineapple are the dominant primary flavours. Vanilla, notes of chocolate and roasted coffee cut through the crisp fruit flavours adding complexity to this youthful wine.

Winemaking
Crisp clean fruit from our Flett Road vineyard was picked at the perfect time with the onset of opulent over-ripeness in some random bunches.
Gently processed and fermented in tank to retain as much primary fruit as possible. A combination of French oak and clean stainless steel matured wine has built the foundation of our 2014 Chardonnay.

Gewurztraminer 2014

Gewurztraminer 2014

Tasting Note
Enticing floral notes of rose petals and jasmine are the initial flavours on the nose and palate; followed by lychee and subtle hints of ginger. This elegant and balanced Gewürztraminer is best enjoyed with Asian dishes or as a solo companion to finish off a great night with friends.

Winemaking
Grapes were picked in the early hours of the morning and left on-skins until the early hours of the evening, enhancing the spicy and floral characters of this originally North Italian variety (Tramin region). To retain as many of these volatile flavours as possible, the wine was fermented at 11 ˚C and ferment stopped through further cooling when it had the perfect balance of natural sugar and acid. The wine was then left on-lees for another 2 months and chilled to add extra complexity.

  • Harvest Date: 14 March 2014
  • Bottling Date: 8 September 2014
  • Cases Produced: 135
  • Winemaker: Stefan Heinrich

Pinot Noir 2014

Pinot Noir 2014

Tasting Note
Ruby red colour leads the way to a harmonious composition of red berry fruits including dark cherry and raspberries, all of them surrounded by chocolatey toasty flavours. Elegant hints of tobacco and mint add to the complexity of our 2014 Pinot Noir.

Winemaking
A number of clones were used in this year’s Pinot Noir, the majority being the French 667 clone from Dijon. Vigorous fruit thinning and leaf plucking allowed for clean fruit. After a short period of skin contact a selected yeast was added and fermented on-skins to dryness. A short period on-skins after ferment allowed the pressed off wine to progress with malolactic fermentation as soon as it was transferred to barrels and tank to ensure a seamless progress. Thus ensuring all the intense berry flavours were maintained.

  • Harvest Date: 29 March - 9 April 2014
  • Bottling Date: 11 September 2014
  • Cases Produced: 980
  • Winemaker: Stefan Heinrich

St Urbanus Riesling 2014

St Urbanus Riesling 2014

Tasting Note
Crisp green apple, zingy lime and grapefruit notes are upfront and lead to subtle flavours of peach and apricot, with hints of hazelnut giving way to the barrel fermentation influence. With a silky texture the complex layers of different flavours balance this dry Riesling nicely.

Winemaking
Due to a lack of tank space, half of our Riesling crop not only got overnight skin contact, but some inoculated and fermenting juice was placed into spare barriques. There they were left to finish fermentation to dryness and were left on their yeast until mid-July.
In short Old World winemaking; creating a very traditionally made dry Riesling.

I have chosen the name St Urbanus to reflect this traditional style of winemaking; dating back many generations of my family’s history of grape growing and winemaking.

Saint Urban is the patron of winegrowers and winemakers, with various clerical figures contributing to the importance of this person. His day of remembrance is the 25th May a week after the ice saints when the growing season begins in the vineyard. On this day there are three St Urbans’ that are celebrated, one a Pope in the early 3rd century, one a Bishop in France mid-6th century and the one that lived as a solitary preacher and had promoted wine growing in South West Germany and Switzerland.

It is thought to be mainly the wonders that the French Bishop worked in the mid-6th century around protecting vineyards against hail and thunderstorms that led to celebrating the St Urbanus day.
In my home area of “Swabia” it was the preacher St Urban who played a significant role by promoting the roman introduced viticulture.
So please enjoy this distinctly different Riesling, my way of showing respect to my heritage.

  • Harvest Date: 9 April 2014
  • Bottling Date: 13 November 2014
  • Cases Produced: 67
  • Winemaker: Stefan Heinrich
  • Technical Details: Alc 11%
  • RS 2.5 g/L
  • TA 6.8 g/L
  • pH 3.2

Classic Riesling 2013

Classic Riesling 2013

Tasting Note
Fresh and youthful, with an abundance of crisp apple, citrus and peach. On the palate the fruity sweetness and zingy lime notes make our Riesling even more enjoyable.

Winemaking Note
Careful de-stemming and gentle pressing of the grapes and a cold settling period of 3 days has led to a clean and crisp juice packed with citrus and apple flavours.

A special German Riesling yeast was used to ferment the wine at 14º with the majority of the wine being stopped at 9.5% alcohol to retain the natural fruit sweetness.
A small portion was fermented to dryness and matured in barrels for more complexity and body. Being left on a fine sediment for 4 months has created a Riesling with a unique character, very much in line with the classic Riesling wines from Germanys Mosel and Rhein Valley.

  • Technical Details: 9.5% Alc
  • 8.8 g/L TA
  • Harvest Date: 1 April 2013
  • Bottling Date: 7 August 2013
  • Cases Produced: 825
  • Winemaker: Stefan Heinrich
  • No Fining Agents Used
